Heaters and insulators can reach high temperatures, posing a significant threat to those around them.

Burn injuries can be severe, depending on the degree. They can happen anytime, anywhere, and to anyone. With the colder months approaching, people are now bringing out heaters and insulators. These devices can reach high temperatures and pose a significant threat to those around them. It's essential to know what to do as well as when to seek medical attention.

According to MedlinePlus, a burn is "damage to your body's tissues caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, sunlight, or radiation." They can cause red or peeling skin, blisters, swelling, and white or charred skin. Burn injuries can range from minor and needing at-home treatment, to severe and life-threatening in some cases, and requiring medical treatment.

There are three types of burns:

The severity of a burn depends on the degree, location, and depth of the injury. First-degree burns, like burning your hand on a hot heater, may not require a doctor's visit. The following first-aid tips can help treat minor injuries:

  • Remove clothing and accessories from the area
  • Run cool (not cold) water over the burn
  • If a blister forms, don't break it. If a blister bursts, clean with warm water and mild soap. Apply an antiseptic like Aloe Vera, which is excellent for soothing and healing burns.
  • Wrap the burn in a bandage
  • Monitor the area and lookout for signs of shock

Seek medical attention if:

  • Electricity or chemicals caused the burn
  • Burns that are larger than your hand
  • If you or a loved one is burned on your hands, feet, face, groin, major joints, or a substantial part of the body
  • If you notice new symptoms or signs of infection
  • A large blister takes longer than two weeks to heal
  • You experience significant scarring
  • Burn appears charred, or have patches of white, brown, or black

Always take caution when using devices that reach high temperatures. No matter how skilled or comfortable you are, always be extra careful. Maintain a distance and keep children far away from heaters, insulators, ovens, and other sources of high heat.
