Walk wisely: 6 common causes of pedestrian accidents

Cell phones and other devices can potentially cause danger on the roads if drivers or pedestrians are too focused on them.

Walking is the oldest and purest form of transportation, and it has countless benefits. Research shows that walking can improve your blood pressure and cholesterol, reduce stress, protect against obesity, and increase cardiac health.

While the health effects are undeniable, walking on the roads can be a dangerous option for pedestrians if they're not aware of the cars around them. In fact, a pedestrian was killed nearly every 1.5 hours in 2017, averaging out to roughly 16 pedestrian deaths per day.

With this in mind, foot travelers should pay attention to the common causes of pedestrian accidents to make sure that they're walking wisely on the streets.

  1. Use of electronics: Cell phones and other devices can potentially cause danger on the roads if drivers or pedestrians are engrossed in them. If you're on your phone, you typically block out any other actions around you. Distracted walking can be just as detrimental as distracted driving. Stay safe by putting your phone away until you reach your destination.
  2. Alcohol consumption: Alcohol has a dramatic effect on pedestrian accidents, and it can stem from both drivers and pedestrians. Alcohol involvement was reported in 47% of all fatal pedestrian crashes in 2017. Pedestrians who have had a few too many drinks are more likely to jaywalk, cross at the wrong time, or misjudge a car's distance from them. Instead of walking home while under the influence, order a taxi or rideshare.
  3. Nighttime darkness: It can be hard to see pedestrians in poorly lit areas, especially if they are wearing dark clothing. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 76% of pedestrian traffic deaths occurred at night in 2018. If you're walking at night, make sure to wear light or reflective clothing, and consider carrying a flashlight.
  4. Quiet cars: The use of electric cars has recently increased. While these cars generally benefit the environment, they also are much quieter because batteries power them. Pedestrians are less likely to hear these cars approaching, which is why a 360-degree look is recommended before crossing the street.
  5. The pedestrian failed to use the crosswalk: Not only is jaywalking dangerous, but it's also illegal in many cities. To avoid a potentially hefty fine and to keep yourself out of danger, only cross the street via crosswalks. Drivers are on the lookout for walkers here, and they're a lot less likely to be caught off-guard by seeing you.
  6. Left turns: The problem with left turns is that both the driver and the walker aren't paying attention to each other. The pedestrians are looking forward since they have the "walk sign" ahead of them, and drivers are watching oncoming traffic for a break to turn. Pay attention to your surroundings, even when you have the right-of-way to cross the street.
